2nd ONSEN・Gastronomy Walking in Yubari

Yubari is in the process of revitalizing its economic and regional development.

Surrounded by the rich nature of mountains, rivers, valleys, and streams, Yubari was first developed as a mining town with a unique history and culture. This event was originally planned as a relaxing, early spring walk in the countryside and a visit to the Japan’s largest Coal Mining Museum. Unfortunately, the museum was involved in a fire in mid-April after its renewal in April 2018. However, Yubari has stayed strong with its ”Can Do” spirit under the mottos of ”Ganbare! Keppare！” Enjoy time in a historic village and visit the Yubari Branch Line of the Sekisho Rail Line which halted operations at the end of March 2019.

Yubari melons will be in season and will be served to all participants！ Enjoy the gastronomy with the specialties of Yubari: food, beverages, and more.

What is ONSEN Gastronomy Walking？	ONSEN・Gastronomy Tourism is a new tourism that introduces the charm of hot spring resorts in Japan by walking and experiencing the food, nature, culture and history of local areas. We open this event, ONSEN Gastronomy Walking, to enjoy a stroll through the beauty of hot spring areas, to experience our history and nature, to taste local foods and beverages, and finally to soak in a soothing hot spring at the end of the tour.

Scenic point	（1）”Defunct Railroad Walk” The former Yubari Station is on the Yubari Branch Line of the Ishikari Line which was closed on March 31. On this course, you start from the station and walk the hiking course along the obsolete railroad. （2）”Yubari Shrine” When Hokkaido Coal Mine Railway Corporation was established in 1889 (Meiji 22), this shrine was built to pray for the safety of the operation in Yubari Coal Mine and the railroad. Famous engraved calligraphy by Heihachiro Togo who was a hero during the Japanese-Sino War decorates the shrine. The view of coal mountains from the shrine is one of the attractions. （3）”Coal Museum” It was renovated in April 2018, but unfortunately a fire broke out in mid-April and the museum was removed from our walking course. You may be able to view it from a distance. （4）”Bonus” The movie sets of ”Kita-no Zeronen” and ”Kita-no 3-busaku” starring Sayuri Yoshinaga have been maintained. The actual set is off-limits, but the course takes in the vicinity.
Information on hot springs	Bath Tickets for Racey-no-yu at Hotel Mount Racey will be given (there is a separate entrance). Please use at your own pace after the walk. This natural hot spring is said to soften cuticles with sodium and hydrogen carbonate, and is also known as hot spring water for beautiful skin.
