What is ONSEN Gastronomy Walking? |
ONSEN・Gastronomy Tourism is a new tourism that introduces the charm of hot spring resorts in Japan by walking and experiencing the food, nature, culture and history of local areas.
We open this event, ONSEN Gastronomy Walking, to enjoy a stroll through the beauty of hot spring areas, to experience our history and nature, to taste local foods and beverages, and finally to soak in a soothing hot spring at the end of the tour. |

【Foods】
・Tama-Kon (Jelled Potato Product, ”Konnyaku”)
A fast food of Yamagata Prefecture, Tama-Kon is called ”Chikara Konnyaku” (Power Konnyaku) in Yamadera. Said to have been spread by Jikakudaishi-Ennin during the Heian period, Tama-kon is an essential when visiting Yamadera. Hot konnyaku cooked in soy sauce is so delicious that you regain energy in body and soul!
・Yamagata Beef Steak Stew
Yamagata beef, which are raised slowly on the rich lands of Yamagata where the seasons are distinct, has a fine texture and a rich, mellow taste. We offer a stew made with this special beef!
・Stewed Taro Potatoes
Speaking of Yamagata soul food, stewed taro potatoes! In the inland region of Yamagata Prefecture, taro potatoes are cooked in a base of soy sauce and beef. In the Shonai region, they are cooked in a base of miso (fermented soy bean paste) and pork. For this event, we are offering the soy sauce base with beef, so satisfy yourself with hot, taro potato stew.
・Rice Balls made with the Tsuyahime brand rice
We offer special rice balls made with the ”Tsuyahime” brand rice that is Yamagata’s boast to the world.
・Mountain Vegetable Tempura
We offer fresh seasonal mountain vegetable tempura on the day of the event.
・Shogi-Shaped Morokoshi Sweets
Tendo produces the most shogi sets in the nation and this is a sweet in the shape of shogi pieces.
・Tendo Koma Ice Cream
We offer ice cream in the shape of Shogi (Japanese Chess) pieces because Tendo is known for Shogi.
【Drinks】
・ Japanese Sake
Enjoy various Japanese Sake including the label first designated with a GI (Geographical Indication) in the prefecture, such as ”Dewa-Zakura” and ”Yamagata Masamune” which represent Yamagata and Tendo.
・Tendo Wine
Try tasting wine made from grapes grown in the rich soil and ideal climate of Yamagata.
・Yamagata Delicacies
100% Juice from locally grown fruit of Yamagata: grape, apple, peach, and others.
・Safflower Tea
Safflower is the Yamagata prefectural flower. ”Safurawa Tea” is made from safflower and warms the body without caffeine. This tea also has anti-aging properties, so it is known as a health tea, especially for women.

・Hojusan-Rissyakuji (Temple)
Jikakudaishi-Ennin is said to have founded Hojusan-Rissyakuji (Temple). Students from a local middle school are scheduled to perform Banji Drums at the opening ceremony.
・Fruit Orchards
Cherry, apple, and peach blossoms are at their best in May. You will walk a course surrounded by fruit blossoms, and if the weather is good, you can observe Mt. Gassan.
・Hills Reminiscent of Basho
The famous poet Basho once walked this street and recited the famous poem, ”Lady’s eyebrow brush, causes me to reminisce, safflowers in bloom.” In the spirit of Basho, we invite you to try making a Haiku poem during your walk. At the finishing point, a Haiku instructor will award the most exceptional poems.
・Dewa-zakura Sake Brewery
Dewa-zakura Sake Brewery, the pride of the world. You can have a tour of the brewery and the attached art museum. Enjoy the tour and a taste of Sake at the facility newly remodeled in December.
・Area of Traditional Japanese Storehouses
You can see shops and houses built in the style of traditional Japanese storehouses.
・Hiroshige Art Museum
Tendo has had a long relationship with the renown Ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige. During the Edo period, the Oda clan of Tendo had financial difficulties and was collecting donations and borrowing funds from wealthy merchants and farmers inside and outside the clan. To show gratitude and to repay a debt, a scroll by Hiroshige was sent to the clan. While taking a rest, be sure to soak your tired feet in the footbath nearby. |

Information on hot springs |
Recover and relax at Tendo Onsen after your journey. There are also foot baths at the 9th rest point next to the Hiroshige Art Museum and at Waku Waku Land. At Tendo Onsen Area, you have six choices of facilities to choose for bathing.
Tendo Onsen was opened in 19th year of the Meiji Era and it is called a "Bijin-no-yu" (hot spring of beauty). A bath ticket will be provided after the walk. The ticket is good for Tendo Hotel, Hotel Osho, Hohoemi-no-yado Takino-yu, Hohoemi-no-kuyufu Tsuruya, Sakae-ya Hotel, or Azuma-so.
If you would like to try day trip bathing at several different facilities, we recommend purchasing a pass (Yumeguri Ticket) for 1,000 yen. |

1. In order to hold the event smoothly and safely, participants shall comply with the regulations specified by the organizer and the traffic regulations.
2. The organizer shall not take any responsibility except for emergency measures in case of injury, loss or other accident."
3. The change of time or cancellation by personal reason is not accepted after registration.
4. The event may be canceled in case of an unexpected accident such as natural disaster, stormy weather, or new strain of influenza epidemic, etc. In that case, we can not compensate for the individual expenses such as participation fee, transportation or accommodation expenses."
5. Please check the event homepage for a cancellation notice.
6. It will be an event involving alcoholic beverages. Please enjoy the appropriate amount and please refrain from acting to disturb other participants. (loud voice, excessive drinking, etc.)"
7. We may ask for an identification card for age verification. Driving cars, bicycles, etc. with drinking is prohibited by law. Please use public transportation. "

You can be certified as a member of ”ONSEN Kishidan (Chivalric order of hot springs)” when you register for the walking event. (*No fee to be certified)
”ONSEN Kishidan (Chivalric order of hot springs) is a group of members supporting ONSEN・Gastronomy Tourism and consists mainly of people who have a passions for hot springs.
”ONSEN Kishidan (Chivalric order of hot springs)” members will receive ONSEN・Gastronomy Walking and other up-to-date information.
