The “Shimabara Amakusa Rebellion,” which most of us learned in our history classes at school, took place in 1637. The cause of the rebellion was the suppression of Christianity and burdensome yearly taxes.
Amakusa Shiro was a young, charismatic leader from Kamiamakusa and a leading resident of the area. At the museum, you can learn more about this impressive individual and the culture of that time, as well as the details of the causes and effects of the rebellion.
The previous Amakusa Shiro Memorial Hall was renewed and reopened in April 2018. It is highly recommended for people who are especially interested in history.
・Spa Thallaso Amakusa Observatory
An observatory next to the hot spring facility“Spa Thallaso Amakusa”was built in the image of a sailing ship with a 360-degree panoramic observation deck of a view of the land, sea and sky of Amakusa. The sunset from the observatory is especially breathtaking.

・Tosengahama
The beautiful beach on Nokama Island is where many people come to swim in summer. On clear days you can view Mt. Bugendake and the Heisei Shinzan Mountains.

(Yushima course)
Yushima is a beautiful trapezoidal island at the tidal entrance of the Ariake Sea. This island is known as “Dango Island” (Bid-Rigging Island) since the Shimabara conflict because the forces of Amakusa and Shimabara reached agreement by meeting and talking on this island.
