What is ONSEN Gastronomy Walking? |
ONSEN・Gastronomy Tourism is a new tourism that introduces the charm of hot spring resorts in Japan by walking and experiencing the food, nature, culture and history of local areas.
We open this event, ONSEN Gastronomy Walking, to enjoy a stroll through the beauty of hot spring areas, to experience our history and nature, to taste local foods and beverages, and finally to soak in a soothing hot spring at the end of the tour. |

Gastronomy menu |
Course(1)
・This course is a 2.3km short-course where you can leisurely walk through a lush forest of native Akita cedar trees to the story of local volunteer. Only bottled water will be provided at the starting point and there are no toilets or meals until the finishing point.
・Finishing Point
Ingredients used in the meals served at the finishing point are locally grown, seasonal vegetables and meats. Enjoy them with the aroma of Akita cedar. The details of the meals are secret and only participants will find out.
Course(2)
・Nagaki Mountain Stream(Starting Point):Beer, Water(bottled),
Beer and Amazake which is now a popular health drinks are provided at the starting point.
・Nagaki Mountain Stream(Point 1): Japanese Sake, Tea(all you can drink in a cup), Uncured Ham with Jam, Deep Fried Dojo(loach fish)
The one and only sake brewery in Odate city, ”Hokushika Brewery.” At the 2018 ”Delicious in a Wine Glass” Japanese Sake Awards, Kita-Akita Daiginjo and Kita-Akita Junmai Daiginjo received golden awards.
Uncured Ham of ”Akita Sangen Pork” that were specially raised for better taste and quality will be served with jam made from locally-grown blackberries.
The raising of Dojo(loach fish) is a new industry in Odate City. Served deep fried, loach are highly nutritious and, as the local saying goes, ”one eel equals one loach.”
・Tekkyo Iron Bridge(Point 2):Amazake(Sweet Sake made from germinated brown rice)
・Nagaki Mountain Stream Crossing(Point 3):Japanese Sake, Apple Juice, Hamburger Cutle(Matsuo Beef)
Hamburger cutlets made with Matsuo beef of Kita-Akita city, which is as good as other major breeds of beef. Matsuo beef are fed the bran of Akita-komachi Brand Rice to bring sweetness to the flavor of the meat.
・Odate Products(Point 4):Japanese Sake, Health Tea(in cups), Tonburi (Kochia plant seeds) mixture, Stewed Horse Meat, Soba(buckwheat) Noodles with Bear Meat.
”Odate-Tonburi”(Kochia plant seeds) is an exclusive product of Odate City with almost 100% Kochia seeds coming from here. It is known as ”Farm Caviar” and you will be sure to enjoy the texture.
Odate City developed as a mining town and their traditional meal is stewed horse meat with bamboo shoots and Konnyaku(jellied konjac flour). It is sweet and a little spicy.
Hearty buckwheat soba noodles with bear meat will warm your bodies. The special event towels will definitely come in handy.
・Odate Ceramics Workshop(Point 5):Amazake(Sweet Sake made from germinated brown rice), Boiled Eggs
Amazake has become a popular health drinks these days. Enjoy it with eggs from Hinai Chickens.
・Furusawa Onsen(Finishing Point):Japanese Sake, Hinai Chicken, Asparagus, Haru-chan Pudding
”Hinai Chicken” is one of the top-three-rated breeds of Japanese chicken. A whole, char-grilled chicken will be cut and served. Enjoy the dynamic grilling and the delicious, simple taste of the chicken.
”Haru-chan Pudding” has a rich taste and is made with drinkable hot spring water. |

Course(1)
・Natural Akita Cedar Field
Located only a few minutes from Route 7 on the Yatate Promenade, you will suddenly be surrounded by stillness and may lose touch with the real world. This is the first step in feeling the splendor of native Akita cedar.
・Tadataka Ino Surveying Team Memorial
The Usyu-kaido Road is intertwined with the history of Tadataka Ino. You will be able to feel a part of that history.
・Yatate(Rising Arrow) Cedar
In the feudal era, Yatate cedar was said to get its name (Rising Arrow) from the custom of shooting arrows in the forest to determine borders. The original old-growth forests have long been logged out, but even today you can feel a majestic sense of history in this forest.
・Isabella Bird Memorial
British traveler and writer, Isabella Bird, visited the Tohoku area during Meiji era and wrote the book, ”Unbeaten Tracks in Japan.” She visited Yatate Pass on July 30, 1878 and wrote, ”Dark, high mountain peaks surrounded by deep cedar forests stands in front of us. I admire this mountain pass more than any others in Japan.” The road over this impressive pass is unforgettable, even for foreign visitors.
・Finishing Point
The final point, Odate Yatate Heights has an outdoor bath surrounded by the impressive Akita cedar forest.
At the source, the hot spring water is clear and has no color, but mysteriously changes to reddish brown at the bath. The hot water flows naturally from and underground spring and is gentle on the skin.
Course(2)
・Walking the Old Kosaka Railroad
At the beginning, the walking starts on the track and not on a road. The course also includes a thrilling walk across an iron bridge overlooking a magnificent view. No doubt this will be a valuable experience!
・Nagaki Mountain Stream in Early Summer
The Nagaki River runs parallel to the old Kosaka Railroad and will have the lush, new foliage of early summer that is sure to ease your body and soul.
・”Odate Manufacturer” display of Magewappa(tube-shaped wooden containers)
”Magewappa,” a traditional craft of Odate, will be on display in the lounge of the railroad factory.
・Jukai Line
Unlike the image of the woodlands of Mt. Fuji, the Jukai Line is a long country road in a peaceful rural landscape. Turning around, you can see Mt. Houozan and view all of Odate City. The annual ”Odate Daimonji Matsuri Festival” is held on August 16, which features the largest mountain-side fire in the shape of Japanese character and fireworks to usher in the festive mood of the area.
・Odate Pottery Classes
Active ceramists from Odate City will offer classes in town. Please visit them if you are interested.
・The World Largest Wooden Dome(Nipro Hachiko Dome). Nipro Hachiko Dome is the largest wooden dome in the world. Once you reach this area, the finishing point is close. Good luck on making it to the finish!
・Furusawa Onsen A smaller and more traditional facility where drinkable hot spring water is available. Porridge and pudding made from the spring water is for sale. The poster Akita dogs of the Onsen, Haru and Hana, will welcome you, so please say hello. |

1. In order to hold the event smoothly and safely, participants shall comply with the regulations specified by the organizer and the traffic regulations.
2. The organizer shall not take any responsibility except for emergency measures in case of injury, loss or other accident."
3. The change of time or cancellation by personal reason is not accepted after registration.
4. The event may be canceled in case of an unexpected accident such as natural disaster, stormy weather, or new strain of influenza epidemic, etc. In that case, we can not compensate for the individual expenses such as participation fee, transportation or accommodation expenses."

”ONSEN Kishidan (Chivalric order of hot springs) is a group of members supporting ONSEN・Gastronomy Tourism and consists mainly of people who have a passions for hot springs.

(1-13-1 Onari-cho, Odate-shi, Akita-ken) Selection of meat will be offered! There are many popular meats in Akita and Odate. One of the three best chickens in Japan Hinai chicken, a new brand of Odate Sakura pork, food culture horse meat from the northern prefecture, and Akita beef. You do not want to miss any of them! The 5th event will be held in ”Akitainu-no-sato(the home of the Akita dog) that reopened in April! Come and enjoy meat cuisine! |
